Frequently Asked Questions

What does individualized tutoring mean?

Individualized tutoring means that we are not promoting a static "product" intended to work for any and all children. Rather, we take the time to meet with you and your child, to figure out where and how they are struggling, whether it's due to a learning disability, an attention deficit, a lack of confidence, or some other challenge. We take the time consult with each child's teacher to discuss their perspective, concerns and goals. Additionally, we take the time to meet the children and find out what their intrests and goals are.

There are many large tutoring companies out there that provide tutoring while promoting their own products. I do not promote a specific product, but instead draw upon my expertise in special education while collaborating with parents and teachers to provide tutoring that accommodates each child's needs.

What grades do you tutor?

While there is some overlap, Pete tutors grades 1 through 8 (ages 6-13) and Grace tutors grades 9 through 12 (ages 14 - 18).

To receive tutoring services, do I need to live in the Washington DC area?

No! While we are based in Silver Spring, Maryland, and have been working primarily with schools in this area, you do not have to be located here. With the onset of distance learning, we are not currently driving to students' homes and schools.

How does this process start?

If you have not contacted us already, the first step is to send us an email. In your email, please be sure to provide your location, your phone number, and the best time to reach you. We also welcome any questions or background information about your child that you would like to share.

Once we receive your email, we will do our best to return your message within 48 hours. For this first call, we want to talk with you to introduce ourselves, discuss what your goals and concerns are, and to discuss logistics, required information, and payment arrangements.

If you would like to start tutoring with us, we will arrange an introductory meeting when we can talk to you and your child. We found that it is best for children, especially the younger ones, to meet us once before we start tutoring so they can get familiar with us and ask any questions they may have. We were doing this when visiting families in person. Now, with distance learning, it's even more important.

Do you tutor during the summer?

Yes! While we typically travel for 2-3 weeks during the summer, we will only be away for one week this summer. As of June 10th, 2020 we are currently scheduling students for this summer.

On your website, you used some fancy buzzword that I'm unfamiliar with. What does that mean?

In the interest of being clear while also providing accurate descriptions about our work, we have added a glossary.
